Four Months of an Open Door

The lack of activity on our blog might give you a sense of how crazy our life has been since we opened Orange Door Kitchen in May. It is one of those items on our to-do list that keeps getting pushed off, delayed by projects and tasks that have tight timelines. But on this cloudy early October afternoon, with an event just a few hours away, I figured I would spend a few minutes to reflect on our first four full months of operation.

Its Harder Than I Thought

Every aspect of running this business requires more time, more work and more money than I was expecting. Days off are extremely rare and eighteen hour days are not uncommon. The do-list never really gets smaller and every day something comes up that there was no way to anticipate that takes up a lot of time. Some days, it’s four or five things. Getting things done right (or done at all) requires a constant reprioritizing of our lists and when an event hits, everything goes on hold until after it is executed. This is a GRIND.

Our Business Model is Going to Work

Despite all of these challenges, I have never been more confident that this business model is a good one, and that Orange Door Kitchen will be successful. We had our first profitable month in September despite the fact that the “engine” of our business is our shared kitchen, and is still underdeveloped. There is a huge demand for all of the different services we offer and people are overwhelmingly positive and supportive of what we are doing here in West Acton. We have to work smarter and be more efficient. We have to leverage partnerships more than we currently are and understand the profitability of each of our revenue streams better. But this is going to work!

This is So Much Fun!

We love working for ourselves and we love the people that we get to work with on a daily basis. We have thirteen fantastic monthly co-working members, four business up and running in our shared kitchen, our own events are going well and we have more private events booked than I can possible keep track of. This is exhilarating work and I think we are pretty good at it.

With any luck you will hear from us on this blog again in November. For now we wish you all a happy fall, and thank you for following along on our journey. If you haven’t joined us for an event at Orange Door Kitchen please do! Our event calendar has a lot to offer no matter your interests or tastes. Cheers!
