A couple of days ago we harvested the last of our carrots and prepped our raised bed gardens for the long winter ahead. This November marked the end of our second year of serious gardening and we continue to be thrilled and humbled by this endeavor.
Over the last two years we have definitely caught the gardening bug. Four raised beds and a few pots provide us with a bounty of produce to enjoy over the summer months with plenty leftover to process and store for winter. While we have come to love the daily ritual of picking through the garden for that day’s harvest, we know that it is not for everyone. You might not have the physical space, temperament or schedule for gardening, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on growing edible delights altogether!
Here we are, at the end of November, having finally found a few free hours to winterize our raised bed garden. Like watching animals prepare their dens and food stores for the cold months ahead, the act of putting our dirt to bed was extremely satisfying. It felt right to do right by the earth that had fed our vegetables and flowers throughout the summer. With a little bit of YouTube coaching, we tilled the soil and added layers of leaf clippings, newspaper and top soil, then sprinkled each bed with a bit of iron phosphate to discourage snails and slugs from setting up shop in our garden. It felt a little bit like making lasagna...just a big, organic, dirty one.
